December’s winter weather is here; and Christmas is just a week away! For our December blog, Daddy Pete’s would like to help with your Christmas Day meal planning by sharing some recipe options that will allow you to use some of the items you planted and harvested during the year. And don’t forget our cookie recipe for Santa’s visit on Christmas Eve!
Christmas Eve Day is a great time to bake for Santa, so we have included a recipe for Soft & Chewy Gingerbread Men Cookies.
For Christmas breakfast, we have the following choices: Pecan-Pumpkin Muffins; Blueberry-Pecan Pancake Bread Pudding; and a Crustless Ham-and-Leek Quiche. Then for a mid-day appetizer, we have several options: Christmas Punch No Alcohol; a Vegetable Christmas Tree Appetizer Tray; Christmas Charcuterie Board Ideas; Christmas Popcorn; and Christmas Crack (Saltine Toffee). For your main Christmas Day meal, we have a Holiday Honeycrisp Salad; Classic Christmas Prime Rib; a Honey-Glazed Ham; Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Cranberries; Mini Hasselback Potatoes; Roasted Carrots with Candied Pecans & Goat Cheese; Creamed Corn; and a recipe for Famous Homemade Dinner Rolls. And then for dessert we have recipes for a Chocolate-Raspberry Cake and Gingerbread Cheesecake. We hope these recipes help add a little joy to your time with family and friends!
Don’t forget your outdoor gardening projects for December. It is still a great month to plant fruit bushes and fruit trees (such as apples, blackberries, blueberries, figs, nectarines, peaches, pears, persimmons, plums, & strawberries); and to plant or prune deciduous trees and shrubs and border evergreen trees and shrubs. The only exceptions for pruning are trees or shrubs that have already set their buds for spring—like azaleas or camellias. And remember when pruning, never take more than 30% of the tree or shrub. For planting, Daddy Pete’s Planting Mix is an excellent growing medium for all of these items.
December is also a good time to freshen the soil in your existing raised beds or to install new raised beds. If you need to amend your existing soil for planting, we recommend using Daddy Pete’s Composted Cow Manure, Daddy Pete’s Kickin’ Chickin, Daddy Pete’s Lawn & Garden Soil, Daddy Pete’s Mushroom Compost, or Daddy Pete’s Planting Mix. If you are installing a new raised bed, Daddy Pete’s Raised Bed Mix is a great mix to use. Remember to put leaves in your compost bin, and to mulch existing plants for the cold weather ahead. And if you are out of ideas for Christmas presents, consider buying gardening supplies for your friends who garden or would like to garden next year!
Whether it’s questions about our products or general gardening questions, don’t forget to visit our website at www.daddypetes.com to submit your questions for our Daddy Pete Podcast with Melvin York. For the month of December, we have several podcasts at the link below.
